Good news for southeast HB – the city has been awarded grant funding for safety enhancements to the intersection of Bushard and Banning streets, namely, converting this to the city’s first traffic roundabout. Conceptual drawings are pictured above.
Â
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) reports that intersections converted from stop signs or signals to roundabouts experienced an injury-crash reduction of as much as 80%.  (For more information see the Federal Highway Administration’s Roundabouts webpage).  You may recall a series of community meetings in December 2022 and January 2023 to discuss this proposal along with the now-completed improvements to Banning. Community meeting attendees strongly supported the roundabout proposal
Â
City staff anticipate it will take a period of months to complete the administrative requirements for the grant and put the project out to bid. This will not get built overnight but we are moving in the right direction.
Â
With this, and the new crosswalk placed this past year between the Fashion Shores tract and Edison High School campus (pictured above), it’s my privilege to do real work for the Real HB.
